"YO!!! today i'm very happy as our choir have got SILVER!!!! this year and we have prove to others that we can!because some CCAs look down on us when we got a COP !! two years back. and not only because of that this means and proves alot of things it proves that we are better and we are not that bad and we are good .
but my poor instructor she have to use so much energy to instruct us and she said this ;if we are able to get a silver than we can open a 2 days one nite chalet soooo nice of her to do that and i would like to take this chance to thank her for everything that she have sacrificed for us and she even came back on a sunday to practice with us and ms lee I believe that all of the choir members do appreciate wad u have done for us a gigantic thank you TO YOU!!!! And you’ll always be our best& favourite instructor !!!!

AS FOR MY TEACHERS MRS YEO AND MS TOH I would also like to thank u ,though u r both very very very busy but u still made time for us !!! and also corrected us during sectionals practices sometimes reminded us for what we have to do .AND also ms toh who had took out some of her precious time to teach to different shape the dynamics which helped us a lot and therefore you’ll always be our best& favourite teachers."

On the 1st day, we reached the airport at Pudong at 6:35 in the morning. We got ont he bus and make our way to the breakfast place. On the journey, we saw alot of things that is differ from S'pore's. We realised that the building there, looks rather old and unique. Their highways are different from S'pore's small and crampy roads. they have this garden in the middle of the highway that are covered with bright green grass and flowers at the borders.When we reached at the restraurant, dishes were served and they looks delicious and appetizing. Sweet & sour fish, fried prawns, vegetables, n somemore. The interesting thing there is the way they served the rice in a very big bowl and we have to take our own portion. After we finished our food, we were ready to go to our next destination, Chenghuang Temple. We shopped a lot of things, especially the teachers.And next we continue our way to SuZhou and sign up for our friendly concert and then we continued our way to the hotel n checked in. we checked everything n everything was okay. we took a quick bath and ready to go to Ancient Shantang Street. By the time we reached there was already dark. the small street are like a very old street that there are buildings by the side of the street. we were feeling tired n make our way back to the hotel.we get to wash up for abt 10 mins ant then we start our practice at night. We couldn't really concentrate but anyway we did our best.

On the 2nd day of the trip, we had the first breakfast at the hotel. We were very much shock to notice that there’s a fly among the buns they served and a cockroach nymph crawling around the tabletop where the beverages are. Feel much disgusted, we managed to eat breakfast in the end. After that, we were driven to Xinghai School for choir exchange. Everyone was very excited because it is the first time we’re meeting the students from Xinghai School. They are nice people, and they are younger than us!After the choir exchange, we went to have lunch. It’s a very good thing, because some of us did not have much breakfast because of the shocking experience at the hotel. Had lunch at a restaurant as usual and went to Tiger Hill; Garden of the Master Nets. I think most of our first impressions were, “Oh my goodness! It’s so hot lah!” There’s nothing much interesting there, perhaps it’s because of the hot weather. Not much of us were listening to the tour guide. Especially Miss Lee, our conductor. Ha-Ha! She can’t stand the weather and we’ll fan her with our pamphlets, in case she gets pissed off. After taking whole lots of photos, and viewing the nice scenery, we went to have an Ancient Canal Cruise.We were supposed to have dinner first, but majority decided that we should go on the cruise before dinner. And so we did. The cruise was extremely fun because everyone was joking around in the boat. We even change the words to the song we’re performing. It’s really funny as I recorded it and show it to everyone, starring Gayatri. She’s really very humorous! Later on, some of us bought Suzhou poker cards. The poker cards are very interesting as they have pictures of Suzhou tourist attractions printed on them. Being all worn out from laughing, we went for dinner. Dinner was a spread! After the dinner, we went back to the hotel. The adults asked us to bathe and meet in Cherie & Kai Hui’s room for night training. The reason was: the previous night training, they did not allow us to bathe. So, the room was very foul-smelling and all of us nearly fainted. But we persevered and survived. After the night training, we all dispersed back to the rooms and do whatever we want. (Even though we were told to sleep after we get back.) Well, eventually everyone slept.

The 3rd day of the trip, we had to wear our school uniforms which was what we were going to wear on stage for the Friendship Concert. Had breakfast, in our hotel rooms because, everyone said that they don’t want to have breakfast that the hotel serves for free. (So we’re not typical Singaporeans!) We had to bring the blazers, makeup and shoes that we’re going to wear on stage. Some even ate their breakfast on the bus. We went to Xinghai School for last choir exchange before the Friendship Concert. It was tiring as some of our throats hurts from the hot weather and night training we had every night after a tiring day. Went for lunch and on the way to venue for the Friendship Concert, we were putting on makeup. While the bus moves and jerks, we were preparing. So we all had a hard time trying to put on makeup nicely.After reaching the place, we went to put on our makeup while waiting for the Xinghai School students to come. When they reached, we went to the practice room that we’re given and started to practice for the last time before the performance. The ladies from Singapore had a hard time because they wore heels, while the students from Xinghai School wore sport shoes.Finally, it’s our turn to perform on stage. Bedok Town Sec Students went ahead first. Being all nervous and excited at the same time, we followed Miss Lee as she conducts. Luckily, it went out quite well, sort of. After the last performance with the Xinghai School students, we could get down the stage. And that’s definitely worth a sigh of relief. Seated with the performers, stayed till the end of the concert, and was very amazed by some choirs. After the concert, we went to take some photographs for memorial purposes before going for dinner.After dinner, we went to Guan Qian Street to do some large scale shopping! Was introduced to things that are – ‘must buys’ by Xiao Che, our tour guide. Had almost 1 hour to shop and meet back at the place. Some of us had a very fruitful shopping session. After shopping, we were all exhausted! So, we went back to the hotel to bathe and had night training even though the performance was over. Being all worn out, we all went back to sleep. (Maybe some of us, Ha-Ha!) We had many wonderful experiences and all of us developed bonds during this trip. Somewhat, closer than before, that makes it great!

On the 4th day, we woke up preety early, well most of us. After we were prepared for the master class, we all went down and board the bus, and were waiting for the last two to come, Gayatri and Esther. not sure wether they already hang up the phone before they sleep or what but the phone was not at the correct place. we thought that the master class we at 8:30am, so we thought we were late. but it was suppose to be 9:30am. We went all the way to the front seats and waiting for the Master class to start. well we got to memorise the OBJECTIVES of the camp in order for us to go to the Nanjing Road to do sm shopping, so we were buzy memorising. The Master class was started by the Latin pronounciations. taking down notes from the slides until my hand were aching.Then we took a quite long break, we went to the small market and bought quite alot of things and then we went back to the hall and attend the next class by Jennyfer tam, about voices. We were told how to use a proper voice to sing in different expressions. But thats not all we were taught abt our larynx and placement for our tounge. thats preety complicating but the fun, well not really fun but lame part was when we were asked to sing happy b'day song so many times.We had finished theMaster class then we went for another, same lunch dishes and we were kinda bored over the food, but Gayatri entertained us during the lunch time. we were laughing very hard that sm of us got "chalked" on our food, according to Ham... but really we were having alots of fun. And then we went to the Suzhou museum. we saw a lot of things and the ancient things there are so nice. cant help it we have to go back and see the closing ceremony of the friendship concert. All the winning Groups, they sang very beautifully. there was this particullar group, small kids, from the stage brought a jasmine plant and gave it to mrs Yeo and that was unpredictable. She was so touched and she said that she will bring the plant to S'pore and plant it n won't let it die.we were back at the hotel and wash up n also get ready for the item that we need to perform for that night. alot of thngs were performed, dance, choral and shadow puppet!!!! thats all and before that we did our reflections and thats it were done and go back our rooms and sleep as the next day we need to wake up so early to make our way to Shanghai.

Pesonal Reflections of Friendship concert:

I'd learnt a lot of things during the Friendship Concert. Things like, our volume have to be louder. It maybe the stage problem. There were many choirs that attended the Friendship concert. Compared to them, I think we're in the average standard. But we're all working hard to achieve in the future. I feel that this friendship concert had motivate us to work even harder.

Personal reflections on master class:

Foundation is very important. Without the fundamentals, it's very difficult to “know” how to sing.

Thing that took note of when interview:

China's education is so interesting.
Almost all the students there learnt how to play piano, & they played it very well. I suppose they have talent in that. Judging them, they aren't really that good in singing, maybe they're somewhat shy or something.

One of the places that we visited is tiger hill in Chinese we call it “hu qiu”
We saw the pagoda that was almost falling apart, yet still beautiful and also the well which had a nice ‘fantasy’ story behind it which gave my team mates and I a deep impression with we also saw many stones there one of them is the “shi jian shi” the thing that made this rock special is the cut that cut the stone into half.

The thing that we like about this place is the part where many of us climbed on to the rocks and going up and down the slopes to take pictures we had lots of fun and we really liked the story behind very rock or well we see although some of them may sound like fantasy but I still enjoyed it anyway I also learn historical things there

The other place that we liked most is the cold mountain temple which is known as “han shan si” in Chinese.

During the period there we saw the Chinese gods which we were not suppose to take any photo of the gods as there is some tradition which says that it would be disrespectful to the Chinese gods as we walk further in we came to this bell inside of an old tower and also those rock with engravings on it which made me think that it’s very amazing as its not easy to make the engraving on rock and the olden people could do it so well!!!!

We like the ice-cream there very much as their ice-cream there taste quite different from us and also the bell too!!! We had to pay 5 RMB to go inside the tower to ring the bell

One of the other place is the Suzhou Museum .

We saw the artifacts, paintings, jade carving, the olden empresses robe some, olden rings with engravings on it and the antique vase which were all collected from the olden dynasty. We like the place very much as the thing there were very unique and very nice out side the museum which is still within the compound of the museum has a very beautiful pond and of cause how can we not take a few pictures of such a beautiful place !!!

On the third day we went for the friendship concert I think that it was good as we had a chance to see how different other choirs perform and learnt from the other choirs over there.I think that it was a successful performance for us. Although our voices were soft, we were not defeated and discouraged but we still bravely stood out and sang in front of a big crowd. Though this friendship concert, not only did we enjoy but we also learnt a lot of things.

We had our master class on the fourth day.

The things that we learnt there is that there are four kinds of Latin pronunciations. We also learnt that stressing certain syllables while singing can make a big difference in the meaning we want to convey.

Dr Wong shared with us some singing techniques. She told us that when we ‘cry’, our throat will open up which is the right way to sing. Through many different ways of singing we could express many different ways of singing e.g. (sadness, happiness……).
Singing is dictated by the emotion which is in turn dictated by the brain, assembled by the body and finally produced by the voice box.

We also learnt about the 3Qs:
EQ - emotional intelligence which is controlled by the mind
IQ - intellectual intelligence which is controlled by the brain
PQ - physical intelligence which is controlled by the body.

19/7/08 :

We arrived at Changi airport Terminal 3 at 10:10p.m. We checked in and relaxed until 11:45 p.m. That’s when we waited to board the plane.

20/7/08 :

At 12:45a.m, we finally boraded the plane, where we took a 6h flight to Shanghai Pudong. Everyone slept in the plane. When I woke up, the pilot told us that we only left 10 minutes till landing. I took a picture of the clouds in the morning. And then the pilot also said that we are landing earlier than expected which was at 6:35 a.m, but we were landing at 6:30a.m. We then collected our luggage and boarded the coach. On the way to Yu Yuan, our tour guide, xiao che[little car], told us about pickpockets and stuff to do,buy and about China.

When we arrived at Yu Yuan, we were alowed some time to go shopping. I think about 1h of shopping. We were then led by xiao che to ChengHuang Temple, where we learned about how people lived and how the rich people in the past lived in china. But I felt a little irritated as the Tour guide mostly explained the history in CHINESE, and I don’t understand chinese.

At 10:00 a.m, we proceeded back to the coach, and headed for Suzhou. We stopped infront of a restaurant and had lunch. The food was great but we didn’t eat much and we checked into the hotel. My teacher told me to switch room to clara’s room. I felt a bit glade cause Clara and I are a great team…hehe…and beause I understand clara better than Crystal ( supposed to be my roomate)…we relaxed a little and bathed.

At 6:00 p.m we proceeded to Ancient Shantang street…or should I say, Shopping street, We took pictures on the a bridge. We then continued moving and shopping for stuff. We stopped by a malt candy store, we had to spin an arrow to see what kind of malt animal we get. I got a peacock, it was very sweet, and amazing how they did it. We headed back to the coach where we went back to the hotel. At 10:00p.m we rehearsed in Michael’s room…I learned some mistakes we always make when we sing. And went to bed.

21/7/08:

We woke up and had our breakfast. We boarded the coach and headed for Suzhou Xinghai School. The principal showed us to the auditorium, where there was a video about Xinghai school, we then rehearsed together with the choir students in Xinghai school. Then we went to the coach to head of to a restaurant for lunch. We then went to tiger hill; Garden of the master Nets, sorry….i don’t remember much about this day… we then left for dinner, and after dinner we went on the Ancient Canal Cruise… I found that people liked to live near the river, which I think was quite dirty, but life seemed peacful for them. After the canal cruise we went to Kai hui’s and Cherie’s room to rehearse for friendship concert, had a debrief and went to bed.

22/7/08 :

We woke up and had our breakfast. We boarded the coach and headed for Suzhou Xinghai School again. We had a Choir Exchange with them, and we had to meet at the music room. The prinicipal led the way to the music room.

On the way, the principal gave us a tour around a section of the school. We have learned that there are 9 grades, like in America. There was an astronomy club, where a telescope and satelight, to see the stars were. And we also learned that the school was only 8 years old and yet had gone so far. We went to the music room where we practiced for 1 hour, I think that was the same time I got fed up with all the short jokes about my height. We then had to go down to the auditorium to watch a performance Xinghai school prepared for us. But before we left the music room, some of us stayed in the music room to write our ‘thank you’s on the blackboard. We washed our hands and went to the auditorium. The performance was wonderful, Xinghai School had so many talented students. After the performances we exchanged gifts and preformed 1 song for them. We left for lunch, but not before getting to know some of the students in Xinghai. After lunch we went to a museum, we then went to a concert hall, where we had our Friendship Concert. All the choirs performed the concert sounded great. But when our choir came on stage, I thought that some people would not be able to hear us as there were only 14 of us (not including the Xinghai students), but I still considered it quite nice. We then went for dinner. After dinner we headed to Guan Qian Street to shop for things. 4 of the Xinghai students followed us for shopping. After shopping we went back to the hotel, the teachers gave us a debrief and we went to bed.

23/8/08:

We woke up and had our breakfast, and proceeded to Choral Master Class with International Adjudicators. I learned about how to project your voice when you sing and what happens to the trough. We then have lunch and went to Cold Mountain Temple and Suzhou Museum. I saw many artefacts that archaeologists found. Some were broken or incomplete, but still looked nice. We then had dinner and went to the Closing Ceremony of Orientale Concentus. I think the competition was fierce. But we didn’t stay long enough to see the end. We then had a debrief and Reflection. And had our CUP NOODLE PARTY….but it was to late, we ate our cup noodles in our own rooms and went to bed.

Day 1: SUNDAY, 20 July 2008
Arrived at changi airport terminal 3.Take some pictures and bid farewell to my family members before boarding the plane. During the checking in, I still remember some of our choir members took a handful of sweets and some started to doze off. Then we board the plane and find our seats. The plane started talking off and soon it was flying, everyone started sleeping but I did not sleep as I sat near the window thus it was very cold and this is my first time flying in a night flight.

After a long 4-5 hours of flight we at last reached Shanghai Pudong airport. We then sat a coach to Suzhou. Upon reaching there, the tour guide took as to a place where we could shop and given us 1 hour to shop.
After shopping, we went to Yu Yuan garden. This garden was considered one of the finest garden. The main attraction of the garden is the structure of the wall as it is shape like a body of a dragon. In the olden times the dragon represents the Emperor. The owners of the garden during that time initially built five legs, but later knock off two legs as during that time people seen building five legs dragon in their house will be beheaded. After visiting all the attractions, we check in the hotel and later met at the lobby so that we can go to Shantang Street and eat dinner. When we went to Shangtang Street, everyone was curious how the candy (Mai Ya tang 麦芽糖) taste and bought it.
As we did not book the places for rehearsal we practice in our hotel room and after that light off.

Day 2: MONDAY, 21 JULY 2008

Wake up and went down to the hotel to eat breakfast. After that we went to Suzhou Xinghai School for choir exchange. There we made new friends and practise our songs. After practising, we went for lunch and started our tour.

The first stop was Cold Mountain Temple (寒山寺).This temple is located in the town of Fengqiao.A Night Mooring near Maple Bridge was written by Zhang Ji, a poet of the Tang Dynasty (618-907) In this poem, Zhang described the midnight bell rings of the Hanshan Temple (Cold Mountain Temple). Since then, the temple has become famous, especially for its bell rings and Buddhism culture. Every year on New Year's Eve in China's lunar calendar, the bell is tolled to pray for the happiness and safety of the coming New Year. This festival attracts thousands of tourists both at home and abroad.

A NIGHT-MOORING NEAR MAPLE BRIDGE
月落乌啼霜满天，江枫渔火对愁眠。姑苏城外寒山寺，夜半钟声到客船。
While I watch the moon go down, a crow caws through the frost;Under the shadows of maple-trees a fisherman moves with his torch;And I hear, from beyond Suzhou, from the temple on Cold Mountain,Ringing for me, here in my boat, the midnight bell.

The next place was tiger hill (虎丘 ). Tiger hill is a popular tourist destination and is known for its natural beauty Sword Testing Stone: King He Lu was a zealous collector of rare swords and it is said that he tested them upon this stone. Tiger Hill Pagoda: The pagoda stands on the hill's summit and is the Pagoda of the Yunyan Temple. As the oldest pagoda in the vicinity of Suzhou it has come to be a symbol of the city and has the distinction of being China's Leaning Tower. It is 48 metres high (158 feet) and for the past four hundred years has leant 359' to the northwest.

Day 3:TUESDAY 22 JULY 2008
We reached Xinghai School and started our practising with them. Then we went for our lunch. When we were on the bus, we started to change into our blazers and shoes. Upon reaching there, we waited for the student in Xinghai School to arrive. We were then given a room to practise and it was time for us to go in. Our school was the third item. We first sang our songs and later we sang with the students from Xinghai. I did not sang cause I was playing the piano. This is my first time playing the piano and accompanying with the choir. It was difficult as normal playing and accompanying with the choir was two different thing . Other than concentrating playing the piano, I still need to watch the conductor and listen to where the choir was singing.
After the friendship concert, it was dinner time and we went for shopping.

Day 4:WEDNESDAY 23 JULY 2008

Attended the choral master class and ate out lunch. We went to the Suzhou museum and Master-of-nets garden. The museum was completed in 2006.This museum has over 30000 cultural relics most notably for excavated artefacts , Ming and Qing Dynasty paintings, calligraphy and ancient arts and craft.

During the night, we attend the closing ceremony of the Orientale concetus where all the winning teams of the choir perform. The performance was nice and I saw what really can a choir do and sing.

Day 5:Thursday 24 JULY 2008

Depart Suzhou for shanghai. After a two hour journey we reach Shanghai Nanjing Road were we shop for two hour. After that we leave shanghai city for Pudong airport. There, we check in and board the plane back to Singapore.
